The basic concept of the translation stage is shown. The components are selected to operate over a wide temperature range, from room temperature to cryogenic temperatures (down to 4K) and work very reliably. The stage is driven by a stepper motor and ball screw arrangement. The motors are optimized to carry the required load at the required speed. Dry lubricated bearings ensure cryogenic operation. The control system takes in required final position as the input and uses an LVDT position sensor feedback to provide drive commands to the motor.

The linear slide has many potential applications in the area of precision high resolution positioning.
Low temperature systems for positioning optics, semiconductor fabrication processes and space based positioning systems are considering the use of the linear slide. Two or more of these slides can be ganged up to achieve a multidimensional positioning system.
