A challenge in the operation of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities for particle accelerators is the control and stabilization of the phase and amplitude of the accelerating fields. Ambient noise and microphonics, which is noise induced by mechanical vibrations, can cause frequency variations that are greater than the bandwidth of the resonators. These vibrations may be caused by surrounding mechanical sources such as fans, pumps, or even vehicles traveling by on a nearby highway, and by electromagnetic fields inside the cavity.
Existing control techniques have proved inadequate to reduce microphonics. Energen has developed a family of fast tuning actuators to address this problem for both elliptical-cell and spoke-loaded SRF cavities.
The advantages of Energens fast tuner over existing SRF cavity tuning systems include:
- Very fast response
- Sub-micron precision motion
- High force capability
- Operable under extreme environmental conditions
- Long life
- Compact, reliable and robust
