Currently in development is a new module that allows for closed-loop positioning of Energen’s magnetic “smart” material (MSM) actuators. The module will interface directly with our line of controllers and will allow the user to maintain a specific displacement of their choosing. The module uses a Linear Voltage Displacement Transducer (LVDT) and a custom amplifier stage to provide sub-micron positioning data. A microcontroller samples the data and adjusts the current flowing to the actuator until the position corresponds to the value selected by the user. This system will allow for precision positioning regardless of the load applied to the actuator so long as its physical and electrical limits are not exceeded.
